At least 26 people have been killed and 28 others injured in a tragic crash involving two minibuses in Ivory Coast on Friday. The accident occurred in Brokoua, a village located in the country’s west-central region, as confirmed by the Ministry of Transport.
Ten of the victims died in a fire that broke out after the collision. Local media shared distressing images showing both minibuses consumed by flames. The Ministry of Transport has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the deadly crash.
This incident adds to the growing list of fatal accidents on Ivory Coast’s roads, which are often attributed to poor infrastructure and reckless driving. Each year, more than 1,000 people lose their lives in road crashes.
In response to these frequent accidents, the government implemented a point-based driver’s license system in 2023. Under the system, drivers begin with 12 points, which are deducted for violations. Speed cameras have also been installed on major highways to monitor traffic and penalize offenders. Despite these measures, fatal accidents continue to plague the country, underscoring the urgent need for improved road safety and better enforcement of traffic laws.
