Three World Food Program (WFP) employees were tragically killed in an overnight attack on their office in Sudan’s Blue Nile state, near the Ethiopian border, the Sudanese government reported on Friday.
The Sudanese Foreign Ministry confirmed that the WFP office in the Yabus area was shelled, leading to the deaths of the three aid workers. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) informed the government of the attack.
In its statement, the Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the assault on UN personnel, emphasizing that the Sudanese army had no operations in the area where the attack took place. Authorities are now investigating the incident to identify those responsible, though the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who have been in conflict with the Sudanese army since April 2023, have not yet commented on the attack.
The ongoing war between Sudan’s army and the RSF has caused widespread devastation, with over 20,000 lives lost and millions displaced. The UN estimates that more than 25 million people are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. The attack on the WFP workers highlights the growing dangers faced by aid organizations in the conflict-ridden country.
