Federal law enforcement probing explosion outside San Antonio as area reels from 4 recent deadly bombings
WASHINGTON: The FBI and investigators from the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) are investigating an explosion at a FedEx facility in the state of Texas, the bureau confirmed Tuesday.
No one was injured in the blast in Schertz, the FBI’s San Antonio field office said on Twitter. Schertz is just outside San Antonio — about an hour drive southwest of the state capital of Austin.
FexEx said separately one of its employees suffered “minor injuries”.
The explosion is the latest in an area wracked by a string of four previous explosions authorities are blaming on a serial bomber. Police are still working to determine a motive for the string of attacks that have recently grown in sophistication.
Two people were killed and four others injured in Austin since the attacks began March 2.
Two male victims aged 22 and 23 were injured Sunday in Austin after a trip wire was activated.
President Donald Trump said the bombings are “terrible”.
“This is obviously a very, very sick individual or maybe individuals,” he told reporters at the White House on Tuesday. “We have to find this very sick person or people.”
There are more than 350 federal law enforcement personnel on the scene in Austin working alongside their state and local counterparts, the Justice Department said in a statement.
The federal response includes surveillance teams, explosives experts, FBI behavioral analysts and ATF forensic analysts, the department said.
“Attorney General [Jeff] Sessions, FBI Director [Christopher] Wray, and ATF Director [Thomas] Brandon are fully coordinating with US Attorney John Bash and the teams on the ground to ensure that every resource is employed to find the killer or killers and get justice for the victims of these attacks,” spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores told Anadolu Agency.
