Champlain, NY – On March 12, 2024, at approximately 6:39 a.m., Champlain Border Patrol agents responded to a report of three individuals walking on Perry Mills Road near Champlain, NY. The agents encountered three male individuals approximately 2.5 miles southwest of the Champlain Port of Entry. One of the migrants stated they were citizens of Bangladesh and had illegally crossed the border into the United States. The agents transported the three migrants to the Champlain Station, arriving at 7:02 a.m., where they were processed and placed in a holding cell.
At around 7:34 a.m., Border Patrol agents were alerted to one of the migrants experiencing chest pains. A Border Patrol agent requested local emergency medical services (EMS) and continued monitoring the migrant. EMS arrived at approximately 7:46 a.m. and evaluated the migrant using a language support service. Despite the migrant’s vital signs being normal and no apparent medical issues, the migrant declined hospital transport. EMS departed at approximately 7:59 a.m.
Shortly thereafter, a Border Patrol agent observed the migrant in distress and subsequently collapsing. Agents requested EMS again and retrieved an automated external defibrillator (AED). Upon arrival at the holding cell, they found the migrant slumped over, breathing heavily, and shaking. The migrant was lowered to the ground, his legs were elevated to increase blood flow, but he soon became unresponsive. Border Patrol agents initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and delivered three shocks using the AED.
EMS returned at approximately 8:21 a.m., took over medical care, and administered medications. The migrant was transported to Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital at approximately 8:45 a.m., where doctors assumed care but pronounced him deceased at 9:42 a.m.
The incident is currently under investigation by the New York State Police, with a review by CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility. The Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General has been notified.–News Desk
