The Biden Administration has announced a significant new security assistance package for Ukraine, totaling $2.47 billion, aimed at bolstering the country’s defense capabilities amid the ongoing Russian invasion. This support includes two key components: a $1.25 billion drawdown of U.S. defense stocks, and a $1.22 billion Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI).
The drawdown package focuses on critical defensive needs, providing Ukraine with air defense missiles, rocket and artillery munitions, and anti-tank systems. Additionally, the USAI package delivers more advanced air defense systems, unmanned aerial systems, and precision munitions to strengthen Ukraine’s counteroffensive efforts.
Included in the new assistance are National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS) munitions, Stinger missiles, High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) ammo, and counter-drone capabilities. The package also offers medical supplies, secure communications, commercial satellite imagery, and extensive logistical support.
This announcement marks the Biden Administration’s twenty-third USAI package and the seventy-third tranche of assistance from U.S. Department of Defense inventories since August 2021. The U.S. continues its partnership with over 50 global allies to provide Ukraine with the resources necessary to defend itself against Russian aggression.
