Canada retracts refugee welcome offer

Canada, once known for its welcoming stance towards refugees, is shifting its approach with a new global online ad campaign warning asylum-seekers about the challenges of claiming refugee status. The C$250,000 ($178,662) campaign will run until March and will be available in 11 languages, including Urdu, Spanish, Ukrainian, Hindi, and Tamil. This initiative marks a significant reduction in spending compared to previous years, with the budget for this four-month campaign representing just one-third of what was spent on similar ads over the past seven years. The ads will appear in search results for terms like “how to claim asylum in Canada” and “refugee Canada,” carrying the message “Canada’s asylum system – Asylum Facts.”
