Ex-Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant Resigns from Parliament

Former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant Steps Down from Parliament

Yoav Gallant, Israel’s ex-Defense Minister, has announced his resignation from the Knesset, marking the end of his parliamentary tenure after months of political turbulence. Gallant, known for his frequent clashes with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his hardline allies, explained that the decision followed deep reflection on his goals in public service.

Dismissed from the government in November amid disagreements over the Gaza conflict, Gallant had retained his seat in parliament. However, he now feels it’s time to “stop, reassess, and choose a new path,” as he stated in a televised address.

Gallant’s tenure has been marked by repeated friction with Netanyahu, particularly over military policies and the controversial exemption of ultra-Orthodox Jewish men from mandatory service. His opposition to Netanyahu’s 2023 plan to curtail the Supreme Court’s powers—an initiative that sparked widespread protests—further strained their relationship, ultimately leading to the plan’s abandonment.

Adding to the tensions, both Gallant and Netanyahu face arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) over alleged war crimes during the Gaza conflict. A Hamas leader is similarly implicated, though Israel has consistently denied the charges.

Gallant’s resignation signals a pivotal moment in Israeli politics, with his departure likely to further challenge Netanyahu’s already fragile coalition and stir debate on the nation’s military and judicial policies.
