Far-Right Rioters Attack Hotel Housing Asylum Seekers in Rotherham

A hotel housing asylum seekers in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, was attacked by far-right rioters on Sunday, marking the sixth day of violent unrest across towns and cities in England. The rioters caused significant damage to the hotel and left residents in shock.

The rioters threw planks of wood at police officers, sprayed them with fire extinguishers, and smashed hotel windows to gain entry. Approximately 700 people attended the riots, setting a generator and a large bin on fire near the hotel, resulting in a small blaze.

South Yorkshire police reported that at least 10 officers were injured during the violence, with one officer left unconscious from a head injury. Police and local volunteers, alongside council staff, were seen cleaning the area around the hotel on Monday.

Local volunteer Alyssa Briggs described the incident as “scary and uncalled for,” emphasizing that while peaceful protests are acceptable, the escalation into violent rioting was unnecessary. She expressed disbelief at the violence and damage caused in a community with families and children.

Assistant Chief Constable Lindsey Butterfield announced that six people had been arrested in connection with the riots, with one person charged. She confirmed that the rioters held far-right and anti-immigration views and made concerted efforts to cause significant damage and harm.

“Yesterday was a dark day,” Butterfield said, addressing reporters in Sheffield. She assured the public that all involved in the violence would be held accountable, stating, “Please be assured, if you were there, we will find you and you will be held accountable for your part in yesterday’s violence.”–News Desk
