Georgia has halted negotiations for EU membership and rejected any budgetary grants until 2028, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced on Thursday. He emphasized that the country aims to be ready for EU accession talks by 2030, despite what he described as the EU’s use of membership negotiations as a form of blackmail. Kobakhidze reaffirmed Georgia’s commitment to becoming an EU member by 2030 and stated that integration should not be seen as a favor from the EU. He also pledged to honor all commitments under the EU Association Agreement without financial support from the EU.
The suspension came after the European Parliament criticized Georgia’s October 26 parliamentary elections, labeling them as “another manifestation of the country’s democratic decline.” The resolution called for the elections to be re-held under international supervision.
