ISLAMABAD:
The Islamabad High Court is set to hear Imran Khan’s appeal against his 14-year sentence in the Toshakhana case on October 29.
A bench consisting of Chief Justice Aamir Farooq and Justice Gul Hasan Aurangzeb will review the appeal. The Chief Justice has already heard requests for an expedited hearing of Khan’s case and granted approval for the main appeal to be scheduled for October 29.
The Accountability Court, led by Judge Muhammad Bashir, had sentenced both Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, to 14 years each in connection with the Toshakhana case. However, the IHC later suspended this sentence, allowing Khan to be released on bail. The pending appeal regarding the Toshakhana verdict is now set for hearing on October 29.
Additionally, the IHC has instructed the executive director of PIMS to form a medical board to conduct a health check-up for Imran Khan, who is currently an under-trial prisoner. The court ordered that Dr. Faisal Sultan, Khan’s personal physician, be included in the board, with the report to be submitted to the Registrar Office. A copy of this order is to be sent to the superintendent of Adiala Jail for implementation.
Meeting with Lawyers
While his wife was granted freedom on Thursday after a nine-month detention, Imran Khan also experienced some relief as Adiala Jail authorities allowed him to meet with his lawyers for the first time in over 20 days, following a court intervention.
A single-member bench of the IHC, led by Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan, resumed hearing a contempt of court petition filed by PTI’s Faisal Chaudhry Advocate regarding the authorities’ refusal to permit Khan’s meetings with his legal counsel.
The petitioner’s attorney stated that since October 3, lawyers have been barred from meeting Khan in jail, questioning, “Would we pose a security threat if we were in jail?” In response, the state counsel indicated that meetings had been suspended due to the lack of court hearings within the jail.
“After October 3, security concerns also led to restrictions. The Punjab government imposed a ban on jail meetings based on the prevailing law and order situation,” he explained.
