Israeli Airstrikes on Gaza Kill 11 Palestinians in UN Shelter Schools

According to the Palestinian news agency WAFA, at least 11 Palestinians were killed in Israeli airstrikes targeting schools run by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) in the Gaza Strip.

The report detailed that the Israeli military conducted airstrikes on the al-Shati refugee camp and two UNRWA schools being used as shelters in the al-Daraj district, as part of overnight attacks in Gaza. Additional attacks were carried out in Rafah, located in southern Gaza, resulting in the death of a young man and injuries to several others in the western part of the city.

WAFA also reported bombings in the city of Khan Younis in southern Gaza, noting that the majority of the fatalities from the nighttime attacks were women and children.

Despite a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire, Israel has faced international backlash for its ongoing operations in Gaza, which escalated following an attack by the Palestinian group Hamas on October 7 of the previous year.

The conflict has resulted in over 37,600 deaths and more than 86,000 injuries in Gaza, predominantly among women and children, as reported by local health authorities.

After more than eight months of conflict, large areas of Gaza have been devastated, with severe shortages of food, clean water, and medical supplies due to a stringent blockade. Moreover, Israel is currently facing charges of genocide at the International Court of Justice, which recently demanded an immediate cessation of its military activities in Rafah, a city that had provided refuge to over 1 million Palestinians before being overtaken on May 6.–News Desk
