Moscow aims to boost ties with Pakistan, Speaker Valentina

Valentina Matvienko, Speaker of the Federation Council of the Russian Federal Assembly, highlighted Russia’s appreciation for Pakistan as an influential global player during her meeting with National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq in Islamabad on Monday.

Matvienko praised Pakistan’s contributions to global peace and reiterated Russia’s backing for Pakistan’s bid to join BRICS. She stressed the need for collaborative efforts to promote peace and prosperity on both regional and global scales.

In response, Sadiq affirmed Pakistan’s dedication to ongoing collaboration with Russia in areas of shared interest. He emphasized the significant role of parliamentary diplomacy in enhancing bilateral relations and advocated for continued engagement through parliamentary friendship groups and high-level exchanges to facilitate mutual learning and shared experiences.

During her discussion with Senate Chairman Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani, Matvienko expressed Russia’s intention to deepen bilateral cooperation in various sectors, including trade, investment, and diplomacy. The talks centered on strengthening diplomatic, economic, commercial, and parliamentary ties between the two countries.

Gillani noted that Matvienko’s visit would inject new energy into Pakistan-Russia relations, fostering regional peace, development, and prosperity. He appreciated Russia’s support in improving Pakistan’s infrastructure and in the oil and gas sectors.

The Senate chairman emphasized the importance of nurturing parliamentary relations, mentioning the establishment of a Pak-Russia friendship group within the Senate of Pakistan. He called for exploring new avenues to enhance investment and increase trade between the two nations, reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to promoting communication for regional peace.

In her final remarks, Matvienko reiterated Russia’s strong regard for its relationship with Pakistan, asserting that improved parliamentary relations would not only strengthen trade and investment but also bring the two peoples closer together.
