Netanyahu Highlights Strategic Importance of Rafah Battle

On Thursday, 16 May 2024, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu conducted an aerial tour of the Gaza Strip, accompanied by IDF Deputy Chief-of-Staff Maj.-Gen. Amir Baram and IDF 162nd Division Commander Brig.-Gen. Itzik Cohen. The tour included a detailed aerial briefing focused on the ongoing operations in the Rafah sector, a key area of strategic importance.

Following the aerial inspection, Prime Minister Netanyahu and Maj.-Gen. Baram visited the 55th Artillery Battalion stationed at Bnei Netzarim base. There, Battalion Commander Lt.-Col. Mor Gurevich provided an overview of the Battalion’s activities since the conflict began, with a particular emphasis on recent efforts in Rafah. Netanyahu engaged with Battalion commanders and soldiers, gaining firsthand insights into their operational experiences and challenges in the southern sector.

During his address to the soldiers, Prime Minister Netanyahu underscored the critical nature of the battle in Rafah:

“We are here on a difficult day, having received the news that five of our soldiers have fallen. This will not diminish our resolve or fighting spirit.

You are the generation of victory, demonstrating exceptional bravery, dedication, and resilience over many months. The people of Israel are proud of you; I am proud of you. We are committed to achieving victory.

The battle in Rafah is pivotal. It concerns not only the remaining enemy forces but also their escape and supply routes. This battle, in which you are playing an essential role, will significantly influence the outcome of this campaign.

I reiterate: We are in a crucial battle now. Your efforts are vital. The successful conclusion of this operation will bring us closer to defeating the enemy.
