Remote Work Reduces Emissions Amid Office Mandate Backlash

A recent study indicates that federal employees in Ottawa emitted 25% less carbon dioxide when working remotely compared to their full-time office counterparts. The reduction was even greater in Quebec, where emissions were 64% lower among remote workers, largely due to the province’s energy-efficient homes.

Conducted by Carleton University and funded by the government, the report surveyed 1,500 public servants from three government offices, including the Canada Revenue Agency, analyzing emissions from transportation, residences, offices, and internet usage.

These findings emerge just over a month after new mandates were implemented, requiring hybrid public servants to work on-site at least three days a week, an increase from the previous minimum of two days.
