Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused the Biden administration of attempting to destabilize Eurasia during a speech at the 31st Ministerial Council meeting of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Valletta, Malta. Lavrov criticized the U.S. for expanding NATO infrastructure into the Asia-Pacific region, claiming that Washington’s actions are creating military blocs and increasing NATO’s involvement in military exercises in areas like the South China Sea, the Taiwan Strait, and the Korean Peninsula. He described these efforts as an attempt to destabilize the entire Eurasian continent.
Lavrov also expressed frustration with the OSCE, accusing the organization of remaining silent on the actions of the Ukrainian government. He argued that there was no room for cooperation or security within the OSCE due to the U.S. and its allies disregarding arms control agreements and resurrecting Cold War tensions, potentially escalating into a direct conflict.
Additionally, Lavrov condemned the cancellation of a visa for Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, preventing her from attending the summit. The decision followed objections from three EU member states. Lavrov’s visit to Malta marked his first time in an EU country since the Russia-Ukraine war began over 1,000 days ago. His participation in the meeting was met with protests, with several delegations, including Ukraine, walking out during his speech.
