The Kremlin stated on Thursday that the recent hefty fine imposed on Google serves as a message for the tech giant to lift its block on Russian broadcasters on YouTube. Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesperson, emphasized that Google’s management should view this as an opportunity to resolve ongoing issues. He reiterated that Russian broadcasters have valid complaints against Google, as the platform restricts access to their channels within Russia.
Local media reported that Google’s administrative fines in Russia have escalated to an astronomical figure of 2 undecillion rubles (approximately $2.5 decillion), which continues to grow due to late payments.
In other remarks, Peskov responded to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s criticism of Western media reports regarding Kyiv’s request for Tomahawk missiles from the U.S., describing Zelenskyy’s reaction as “nervous.” He suggested that Ukraine’s increasing anxiety stems from the clarity of the situation on the frontlines.
Additionally, Peskov addressed speculation about North Korean troops potentially supporting Russian efforts, highlighting that the strategic partnership between Russia and North Korea facilitates broad cooperation and should not cause alarm. He refrained from commenting on North Korea’s recent missile tests, stating they fall outside his scope.
Regarding the easing of sanctions on specific Russian financial institutions, Peskov noted that the U.S. often adopts a pragmatic approach aligned with its economic interests, which can influence decisions regarding sanctions.
