Russia urges UN to ease Israel-Iran tensions

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Monday that Moscow hopes the UN Security Council will help ease Middle East tensions after Israel’s recent airstrikes on Iran. The attacks targeted military sites in Tehran and western Iran early Saturday, reportedly causing limited damage but resulting in five deaths, including four Iranian soldiers. This escalation follows Iran’s earlier missile strikes on Tel Aviv, which it described as retaliation for the assassinations of key regional leaders.

During a press conference with Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Abdullah Ali al-Yahya, Lavrov noted that Israel’s strikes have intensified an already complex situation, expressing hope that the UN Security Council meeting on Iran’s appeal could bring clarity, though significant progress might be challenging. Lavrov emphasized the importance of reaching a ceasefire in both Palestine and Lebanon and called for a long-term solution to stabilize the region and address worsening humanitarian issues, highlighting the urgency of establishing a Palestinian state in line with UN resolutions.

Kuwait’s foreign minister added that his country supports achieving a ceasefire soon and urged parties to negotiate, emphasizing that a two-state solution is essential to end the ongoing violence and secure Palestinian statehood.
