Supreme Court schedules election run-off on March 31
FREETOWN, Sierra Leone (AA) – Sierra Leone’s Supreme Court has postponed the country’s presidential run-off elections to Saturday March 31st.
The decision came after an injunction filed by a ruling party lawyer was lifted earlier on Monday.
Lawyer Sorie Ibrahim Koroma of the ruling All People’s Congress (APC) party among other things petitioned the Electoral Commission over suspected irregularities.
A high court in Freetown on Saturday put an injunction on the election stopping the commission from going ahead with the run-off, initially scheduled to be held on Tuesday.
The main opposition candidate Julius Maada Bio of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) and his main challenger Samura Kamara of the APC were the frontrunners in the first round held on March 7, with 43.3 and 42.7 percent respectively.
Tension has been mounting across the country as both the ruling and the opposition parties are confident of victory.
Outgoing President Ernest Bai Koroma has however promised a peaceful and smooth transition of power.–AA
