Spain ends Argentina row with new ambassador

Spain has appointed a new ambassador to Buenos Aires, aiming to resolve a months-long diplomatic dispute with Argentina, an official statement announced on Tuesday.

Following the weekly Cabinet meeting, the government named Joaquin Maria de Aristegui Laborde as the new Spanish ambassador to Argentina.

In a joint statement, both countries pledged to “strengthen our relationship to achieve the highest level of trust and mutual respect in political and institutional matters, as our people deserve.”

The row began in May after Argentina’s President Javier Milei, speaking at a rally for Spain’s far-right Vox party in Madrid, accused Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s wife, Begona Gomez, of corruption and later refused to retract the comment. In response, Spain withdrew its ambassador to uphold “the dignity and sovereignty of Spanish institutions.” Argentina did not reciprocate by recalling its ambassador from Madrid.
