In his New Year’s address, Chinese President Xi Jinping made a bold declaration: “No one can stop” the reunification of Taiwan with mainland China. He emphasized that the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are one family, united by blood and history, and nothing could sever their ties.
Xi’s words come as tensions simmer over Taiwan, a hot-button issue between Beijing and Washington. While the U.S. does not officially recognize Taiwan as a separate nation, it remains Taiwan’s closest ally and its primary weapons supplier. With Donald Trump set to take office in the U.S. later this month, many are bracing for potential turbulence in the already strained relations between the two superpowers.
As China presses forward with its stance on Taiwan, the political landscape could become even more charged, especially with the incoming U.S. administration’s approach yet to be fully seen.
