Ten Hag’s Troubles at United

Erik ten Hag’s departure from Manchester United marks another challenging chapter in the club’s ongoing quest for stability since Sir Alex Ferguson’s exit. During his 20-month tenure, Ten Hag encountered numerous obstacles, including problematic signings, player disputes, and tactical failures.

The situation reached a climax on Monday when Ten Hag was informed of his dismissal during a meeting with Chief Executive Omar Berrada and Sporting Director Dan Ashworth. They cited poor results and lack of team improvement as reasons for the decision, despite a recent contract extension.

United’s significant financial investment of around £615 million under Ten Hag, including £200 million this summer, did not yield the expected results. Issues with transfers, such as the underperformance of players like Antony and injuries to Mason Mount, raised questions about the club’s recruitment strategy.

Additionally, tactical shortcomings became apparent, with the team facing a weak defense and inconsistency in attack, culminating in notable defeats, including a humiliating 7-0 loss to Liverpool.

Ten Hag’s relationships with players also came under scrutiny, particularly his interactions with figures like David de Gea and Cristiano Ronaldo, which led to discontent in the locker room.

The club’s upper management had considered managerial changes since as early as May, evaluating potential replacements such as Thomas Tuchel and Mauricio Pochettino, but decided against a change until this season’s disappointing start made Ten Hag’s position untenable.

Ruud van Nistelrooy will step in as interim manager following Ten Hag’s exit, marking the fifth permanent managerial change at United since Ferguson’s retirement in 2013. The circumstances of Ten Hag’s departure are likely to impact the club’s search for a new manager moving forward
