President-elect Donald Trump stated that the United States should refrain from becoming involved in Syria’s ongoing conflict, especially as opposition forces continue to advance toward the capital, Damascus. In a social media post, Trump declared, “THIS IS NOT OUR FIGHT,” emphasizing that the U.S. should not intervene militarily in the region.
The Syrian conflict, which began in 2011 as a peaceful uprising, has evolved into a complex civil war involving multiple international actors, including Russia, Iran, and Hezbollah, who support the regime of President Bashar al-Assad. Over half a million people have died, and the war has fractured the country. The opposition, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, a group previously linked to al-Qaeda, has made significant progress in recent weeks, pushing closer to Damascus.
Trump also criticized the U.S. government’s past involvement in the conflict, suggesting that Assad’s government should not receive U.S. support. However, he also argued that the ongoing Russian military support for Assad is failing to stop the opposition’s advances. He acknowledged the possibility that the rebels might be able to force Assad out of power but reiterated that the U.S. should not become embroiled in the fight, urging, “LET IT PLAY OUT. DO NOT GET INVOLVED!”
While U.S. forces remain in Syria to assist Kurdish allies and prevent a resurgence of ISIS, Trump’s statement signals a preference for the U.S. to stay out of the conflict and allow the situation to unfold without American military intervention.
