Türkiye urges swift UN action on Sudan crisis

Türkiye’s UN representative, Ahmet Yildiz, called for urgent international action to address Sudan’s worsening crisis during a Security Council meeting on Thursday. He stressed that over 11 million people have been displaced, and hundreds of thousands have died due to the ongoing conflict, which has also devastated vital infrastructure, including healthcare facilities.

Yildiz emphasized Türkiye’s commitment to Sudan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, urging a focus on the root causes of the conflict rather than just the symptoms. He supported the Jeddah Declaration as a crucial framework for peace and called for an immediate ceasefire to alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people.

Highlighting Türkiye’s humanitarian efforts, Yildiz mentioned the delivery of 8,000 tons of aid to Port Sudan via three aid ships and the continued operation of the Turkish hospital in Nyala despite challenging conditions. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also expressed Türkiye’s readiness to assist Sudan during a conversation with Sudan’s Sovereignty Council President, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.

The meeting underscored the need for a unified global effort to stabilize Sudan and prevent further bloodshed, as the ongoing conflict between Sudan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has claimed over 20,000 lives and displaced millions since April 2023, leaving over 25 million in urgent need of assistance, according to the UN.
