UK Urges Calm as Kashmir Attack Sparks Tension Among Diaspora in London

British MPs warn rising India-Pakistan tensions may trigger unrest among South Asian communities in the UK.

The UK government has called for restraint among Indian and Pakistani communities in London, following fears that the deadly April 22 militant attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) could lead to diaspora unrest.

Foreign Office Minister Hamish Falconer, addressing Parliament, warned of heightened sensitivities across Britain’s South Asian communities and urged community leaders to promote calm. Lawmakers noted signs of escalating hostility near the Indian and Pakistani high commissions in London.

The UK, home to millions with South Asian heritage, is monitoring the situation closely, wary of foreign conflicts spilling onto its streets. In response to the attack in Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives, the Foreign Office has also updated its travel advisory, warning against visiting IIOJK due to security threats.

Falconer reiterated Britain’s stance on the Kashmir dispute, emphasizing that any resolution must come through bilateral dialogue between India and Pakistan, respecting the Kashmiri people’s aspirations.
