Fifteen competitors took part in the first-ever ultra-endurance race around Antarctica’s Ultima Base Camp, enduring freezing temperatures as low as -25°C. The Antarctic Ice Ultra challenged runners with three distances—100 miles, 100 km, and 50 miles—on a 4.2 km loop, with the option to rest at a mess tent.
Paul Johnston and Roberto Sembiante set a new world record for the 100-mile race, completing it in 23 hours, 22 minutes, and 57 seconds, beating the previous record by over an hour. China’s Yusheng Ni, who had competed in the New York City Marathon earlier, won the 100 km race in 10 hours, 40 minutes, and 15 seconds. The event will return next November.
