BGA Releases Johnson’s 2025 Budget

Chicago is facing a nearly $1 billion budget deficit for 2025, leading Mayor Brandon Johnson to propose a $346 million property tax increase. The additional revenue would be used to address the city’s long-term obligations, including pensions and bonds. While the tax hike is aimed at preventing mass layoffs, it will result in the elimination of 743 vacant positions across the city, including 400 from the Chicago Police Department. Ahead of the departmental budget hearings, the Better Government Association is releasing detailed budget snapshots for each department.
