Biden Pardons Turkeys Peach, Blossom Ahead of Thanksgiving
President Joe Biden upheld the White House Thanksgiving tradition on Monday by granting a presidential pardon to two turkeys named Peach and Blossom.
The lighthearted ceremony, held on the South Lawn, drew a cheerful crowd as the president shared humorous anecdotes about the birds and the holiday. Peach and Blossom, weighing 42 and 47 pounds respectively, were raised in Minnesota and selected for the annual honor.
During his remarks, Biden joked about the turkeys’ lives of luxury, saying, “These two birds have already experienced more pampering than most Americans get in a lifetime.” He also emphasized the importance of coming together during Thanksgiving, reflecting on gratitude and unity.
Peach and Blossom will now enjoy a peaceful retirement at a local university’s agricultural program, avoiding the fate of becoming part of a Thanksgiving feast.
The presidential turkey pardon has been a longstanding tradition, dating back to President Abraham Lincoln, though it officially became an annual event during President George H.W. Bush’s administration.
The lighthearted event offers a moment of joy and humor in the lead-up to the holiday season, reminding Americans of the values of compassion and celebration.
