Syrians Demand Justice One Year After Assad’s Fall
One year after the fall of Bashar al-Assad, many Syrians continue to demand justice for the crimes committed during the conflict. They believe the country cannot move forward until accountability becomes a reality.
Communities Still Seek Accountability
Gamal Mansour, a researcher at the University of Toronto, said Syrians remain determined to hold perpetrators responsible. He explained that many people know the individuals who harmed them, which has led to isolated acts of revenge.
However, he noted that these incidents remain limited because communities want justice to be achieved through proper legal processes, not through ongoing cycles of violence.
Transitional Justice Viewed as Essential
Mansour emphasised that transitional justice plays a critical role in Syria’s recovery. He added that without truth, accountability, and fair trials, Syrians will struggle to rebuild trust and create long-term stability.
