The Canada Plastics Pact (CPP) has unveiled its 2023-24 Impact Report, highlighting its progress in tackling plastic waste and advancing toward a circular economy. The report showcases the collaborative efforts of businesses, governments, and environmental organizations committed to reducing plastic pollution across the country.
One of the key achievements outlined in the report is the CPP’s role in accelerating the transition to sustainable packaging. The Pact has worked with major companies to design and implement more sustainable packaging solutions, with a focus on reducing plastic waste and increasing the recyclability of products. This includes efforts to eliminate unnecessary single-use plastics and to enhance the recycling infrastructure in Canada.
The report also highlights the Pact’s progress in setting clear, actionable goals to drive change in the plastic packaging industry. These include targets to ensure all plastic packaging is reusable, recyclable, or compostable by 2025 and to reduce plastic waste entering landfills. In addition, the CPP has been instrumental in fostering innovation, promoting the development of alternative materials, and supporting efforts to improve plastic collection and recycling systems.
Despite these achievements, the report stresses that significant challenges remain. The Pact acknowledges that achieving a truly circular economy for plastics requires continuous collaboration, investment in infrastructure, and policy changes. As it moves into the next phase, the Canada Plastics Pact remains committed to driving change, with a vision of a future where plastic waste is minimized, and all plastics are safely reused or recycled.
