Rights Groups Applaud Canada’s Exclusion From Trump’s ‘Board of Peace’
Advocacy Groups Reject US Gaza Proposal
Canadian human rights organizations have welcomed the decision to remove Canada from US President Donald Trump’s proposed “Board of Peace,” arguing that the initiative undermines Palestinian self-determination.
The groups said Canada should avoid involvement in what they described as a politically motivated plan that fails to respect international law or human rights standards, particularly amid the ongoing crisis in Gaza.
Muslim Council Calls Decision a Relief
The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) said on Friday that it felt relieved Canada was no longer invited to participate in the Trump-led body. The organization stressed that the timing of the proposal was deeply troubling.
According to the NCCM, Canada should focus on upholding international law rather than joining initiatives that ignore widespread humanitarian concerns. The group said the so-called Board of Peace trivializes Palestinian self-determination and conflicts with Canada’s stated values.
Concerns Over Legitimacy and Messaging
Similarly, Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) warned that Canadian participation would have lent unwarranted credibility to the board. The organization argued that involvement would weaken Canada’s position on human rights and global justice.
CJPME added that Canadians expect their leaders to take a clear and principled stance against policies they view as overreaching. In its view, participation would have sent mixed signals at a time when clarity is essential.
Pressure on Canadian Leadership
Advocates emphasized that Prime Minister Mark Carney should maintain a firm commitment to human rights and international norms. They said Canada must resist engagement with initiatives that risk endorsing power imbalances or sidelining Palestinian voices.
