Chaos Erupts in US Congress

House Speaker Election Plunges US Congress into Turmoil

WASHINGTON: Chaos erupted in the newly convened US Congress on Friday as rebel Republicans derailed Louisiana Congressman Mike Johnson’s bid to retain his role as Speaker of the House. Despite strong endorsements from incoming President Donald Trump, Johnson failed to secure the simple majority needed to clinch the top legislative position.

Johnson, backed by Trump on social media with wishes of “good luck,” fell short after receiving 216 votes, narrowly edging Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, who garnered 215. However, with three Republican defections, Johnson missed the required 218, forcing a second round of voting.

The deadlock exposed fractures within the Republican Party, with conservatives opposing Johnson for his bipartisan compromises and perceived softness on fiscal issues. Meanwhile, moderate Republicans eyed alternative candidates, adding to the uncertainty.

The impasse jeopardizes critical House operations, including certifying Trump’s presidential victory ahead of his inauguration. The standoff also deals a blow to Trump’s influence, as it marks the second time his sway over Republicans has faltered after their December defiance on the borrowing limit.

Johnson, a relatively obscure figure prior to his 2023 speakership, initially gained prominence for championing Trump’s 2020 election challenges. However, his bipartisan deals have alienated hardliners, including Kentucky’s Thomas Massie, who criticized Johnson as “the least objectionable candidate” in 2023.

With Republican divisions deepening, the speakership contest mirrors the disarray of past House sessions, leaving Congress in limbo as lawmakers scramble to break the deadlock.
