Egypt and UK Discuss Regional Crises and Strengthen Bilateral Ties

CAIRO – Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and UK National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell met in Cairo on Thursday to tackle pressing issues in Gaza, Syria, and Sudan, alongside strengthening bilateral ties.

Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to brokering an immediate cease-fire in Gaza, urging an end to Israel’s ongoing violations against Palestinians. He stressed the urgency of delivering humanitarian aid and achieving a comprehensive peace settlement based on a two-state solution, with East Jerusalem as the capital of an independent Palestinian state.

This comes amidst a dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where an ongoing conflict has claimed nearly 45,600 lives since October 2023, mostly women and children. Despite UN calls for a cease-fire, the violence continues unabated.

On Syria, Abdelatty underscored Egypt’s unwavering support for the Syrian people and the preservation of the country’s unity and institutions. He advocated for an inclusive, Syrian-led political transition free from external interference, emphasizing stability and respect for Syria’s diversity.

Regarding Sudan, the Egyptian foreign minister called for an immediate cease-fire and expedited humanitarian aid. He also highlighted the importance of supporting Sudanese state institutions to ensure long-term stability.

The talks reflect Egypt’s active role in addressing regional turmoil while fostering deeper cooperation with the UK. Both sides agreed on the need for sustained dialogue to navigate shared challenges and promote peace across the region.
