EU Should Start Ukraine Membership Talks by June, Says von der Leyen

The European Union should commence membership negotiations with Ukraine by the end of June, according to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Speaking at the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Berlin, von der Leyen praised Ukraine for meeting all the required steps for EU accession talks.

“Ukraine has fulfilled all the steps that we had set out, and this is why we believe the EU should begin accession talks with Ukraine already by the end of this month,” von der Leyen stated. She commended Ukraine for implementing significant reforms despite the ongoing war, highlighting the nation’s reliability and dedication.

Ukraine applied for EU membership in February 2022 and was granted candidate status in June 2022. Although EU leaders approved the opening of membership negotiations in December last year, a specific date for the talks had not been established until now.–News Desk
