Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth addressed U.S. troops in Guam, emphasizing military readiness, deterrence, and the Defense Department’s core priorities of restoring the warrior ethos, rebuilding the force, and strengthening deterrence.
Speaking at Andersen Air Force Base, Hegseth called the Indo-Pacific region the “tip of the spear,” stressing that U.S. forces stationed there play a critical role in global security. He underscored the importance of strength in preventing conflict, echoing the motto: “Those who long for peace must prepare for war.”
Acknowledging his own military background, Hegseth related to the troops by recalling his time as a junior officer. Now leading the Pentagon, he said his priority is ensuring service members have the training and resources to stay mission-ready.
Hegseth also shared a personal connection to Guam, recounting how his grandfather, Navy Ensign Milton Haugen, was stationed there in 1945. Reflecting on his grandfather’s service, he told the troops they are carrying on a proud legacy.
“You are America’s power projection,” Hegseth told the crowd. “The entire chain of command, from President Trump down, is counting on you to be ready.”
