President Herzog Begins Historic State Visit to Germany, Marking 60 Years of Diplomatic Ties
Berlin, Sunday, 11 May 2025 –
President Isaac Herzog and First Lady Michal Herzog departed Israel this evening for a significant one-day state visit to Germany, invited by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. The visit commemorates 60 years of full diplomatic relations between Israel and Germany and highlights the enduring partnership between the two nations.
Scheduled from May 11–13 (13–15 Iyar), the visit includes high-level meetings with President Steinmeier, Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the President of the Bundestag, and other senior German officials. President Herzog will also be the guest of honor at an official state event at the German Presidential Palace.
A major part of the itinerary will be a joint memorial ceremony at Platform 17, Berlin-Grunewald Station—a poignant site tied to Holocaust remembrance. Additionally, both presidents will participate in a special youth dialogue event, engaging over 100 Israeli and German students on themes of shared history and future cooperation.
This diplomatic milestone reinforces the strong bond between the two countries, emphasizing a mutual commitment to historical reconciliation, democratic values, and regional stability.
Following the visit, President Steinmeier and his wife will accompany the Herzogs back to Israel for a reciprocal state visit. This will include a second joint visit to Kibbutz Be’eri, heavily impacted during the recent war, as well as a visit to the Israel National Library. President Herzog is also set to award the Presidential Medal of Honor to President Steinmeier during a formal ceremony at the President’s Residence in Jerusalem.
