Key Energy Corridor Between East and West Gains Momentum as Netanyahu and Christodoulides Seal Strategic Pact
In a significant diplomatic meeting held on Sunday, May 4, 2025, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, along with Energy Minister Eli Cohen and Cypriot Energy Minister Giorgos Papanastasiou, agreed to sign a major electricity cable agreement this year under the US-led IMEC (India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor) initiative.
The project, aimed at enhancing regional energy security, will establish an electric connection between Israel and Cyprus, with future plans to extend the line to Europe. For Israel—often viewed as an energy “island”—the IMEC cable represents a transformative step toward integrating with broader energy markets and establishing a strategic East-West infrastructure link between India and Europe.
Also discussed during the meeting was a near-finalized agreement concerning the joint management of the Aphrodite-Yishai gas field, which lies between the two nations’ maritime borders. Negotiations are in advanced stages, and the formal signing is expected within the next two months.
This dual-track progress on energy cooperation and infrastructure underscores Israel and Cyprus’s commitment to deeper economic and strategic ties, aligned with global energy connectivity goals.
