Lebanon Water Crisis Deepens Amid Escalating Conflict

Report Accuses Israel of Targeting Water Infrastructure in Lebanon

Report Claims Israel Targets Water Infrastructure in Lebanon

LONDON — March 24, 2026

An international aid organization has accused Israel of expanding its military tactics to Lebanon by targeting water infrastructure during the recent escalation.

Damage to Essential Services

According to Oxfam, Israeli forces have struck key water and sanitation facilities, including sites that were already under repair after previous conflicts. The group stated that these attacks have disrupted access to clean water for thousands of civilians.

In particular, the report highlights that within just four days during the early phase of the escalation, Israeli operations damaged at least seven major water sources in Lebanon’s Bekaa region. These included reservoirs, pipelines, and pumping stations that served nearly 7,000 people.

Legal Concerns Raised

Oxfam emphasized that international law, including the Geneva Conventions, strictly prohibits attacks on infrastructure essential for civilian survival. It also warned that deliberately restricting access to water or blocking humanitarian aid could amount to a war crime.

Furthermore, the organization stressed that the long-term consequences could be severe, especially for displaced communities returning to areas without reliable water supplies.

Wider Infrastructure Impact

In addition to water facilities, the report noted damage to other critical infrastructure. Israeli forces have reportedly struck electricity networks and bridges, which has disrupted transport and limited access to essential services in several towns and villages.

Allegations of Repeated Tactics

Oxfam’s Lebanon director, Bachir Ayoub, stated that similar patterns had previously emerged in Gaza. He argued that the same approach now appears in Lebanon, raising concerns about accountability and civilian protection.

He added that the lack of international response has allowed such actions to continue, leaving civilians to bear the consequences.

Rising Casualties and Regional Escalation

Meanwhile, Lebanese officials report that Israeli strikes have killed at least 1,039 people and injured 2,876 since March 2.

The escalation comes amid a broader regional conflict. Since February 28, a joint US-Israeli campaign in Iran has resulted in more than 1,340 deaths. In response, Iran has launched drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, as well as countries hosting US military assets, including Jordan, Iraq, and several Gulf states.
