North Korea Approves Key Defense Pact with Russia

North Korea has ratified a significant defense pact with Russia, which includes a mutual military assistance clause in case either nation is attacked. The treaty, officially known as the “Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership,” was signed by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Monday, following its signing in Pyongyang in June 2024.

The agreement will come into effect once both countries exchange ratification instruments. This development follows President Vladimir Putin’s ratification of the treaty on Saturday.

The pact focuses on military aid in the event of external aggression and aims to strengthen a partnership based on respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, and non-interference. Despite claims from the U.S., South Korea, and Ukraine that North Korea sent troops and artillery to support Russia in the Ukraine conflict, Pyongyang has not confirmed these allegations.
