Pakistan Signs UN Pact on Marine Biodiversity as Dar Pushes Key Global Issues

Pakistan has officially signed the United Nations High Seas Treaty in New York, committing to the protection of marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdictions. The agreement marks a major step toward sustainable ocean governance and environmental cooperation.
Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, representing Pakistan at the UN event, signed the pact during a high-level diplomatic meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
“We stand with the global community to protect oceans for future generations,” Dar stated after the signing.
Alongside the environmental milestone, Dar used the platform to highlight Pakistan’s longstanding international concerns, including the Kashmir dispute, water sharing conflicts with India, and the plight of Palestinians.
“Peace cannot be achieved without justice — in Kashmir, in Palestine, and in fair access to water,” he told reporters.
Furthermore, Dar emphasized the need for multilateral action and equitable resource sharing, urging the UN to play a more active role in conflict mediation and environmental justice.
The UN Secretary-General welcomed Pakistan’s participation in the biodiversity treaty and expressed support for continued diplomatic dialogue on regional disputes.
In addition, Pakistan’s signature on the High Seas Treaty aligns with its commitments under the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in protecting marine life and promoting climate resilience.
Finally, this move signals Pakistan’s intent to strengthen its global presence on environmental issues while continuing to advocate for key political causes on the international stage.
