Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stressed the importance of a “Team Canada approach” to counter U.S. president-elect Donald Trump’s pledge to impose a 25% tariff on all imports from Canada and Mexico. Following a call with Trump, Trudeau emphasized cooperation and strong ties between the two nations. He has begun coordinating with provincial premiers and plans a first ministers’ meeting to address the issue.
Trump stated the tariffs would remain until Canada and Mexico address illegal border crossings and drug trafficking, adding that both countries must act to resolve these issues. Canadian leaders, including premiers Doug Ford and François Legault, expressed concern, warning of significant economic harm to both nations.
Business groups echoed these fears, with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce estimating that such tariffs could cost Canada $30 billion annually and the U.S. $125 billion, leading to higher prices and reduced competitiveness for American businesses. Ottawa pledged to continue discussions on border security with the incoming administration.
