May 5, 2025 | By David Vergun
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned of China’s expanding influence in the Western Hemisphere, calling it a threat to regional peace and prosperity. Speaking at the Pentagon during an official ceremony to welcome Peruvian Defense Minister Walter Astudillo and Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer, Hegseth highlighted the strategic importance of joint deterrence efforts.
“Beijing is making aggressive economic moves across the region. To preserve peace and avoid future conflict, we must act in partnership to deter these potential threats,” Hegseth stated.
He further praised Peru’s commitment to regional stability and emphasized the significance of mutual defense collaboration. “Putting America first means strengthening partnerships that defend shared values and ensure security across the hemisphere,” he added.
The meeting reflects growing U.S. efforts to bolster alliances in Latin America amid rising concerns over China’s presence and economic maneuvers in the area.
