WHO Warns of Famine Risk as Two Million Face Starvation in Gaza

Geneva, May 20, 2025 —
World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has issued a stark warning that two million people in Gaza are facing starvation, with the ongoing blockade severely restricting the flow of humanitarian aid.

Speaking on Monday, Dr. Tedros said 160,000 metric tonnes of food are stuck at border crossings, just minutes from the Gaza Strip, due to access restrictions. He emphasized that WHO and other UN agencies are fully prepared to deliver life-saving aid immediately once clearance is granted.

The Israeli government has enforced a total blockade on Gaza since March 2, citing pressure tactics against Hamas. On Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged that limited food aid would now be allowed in, citing “diplomatic reasons” and the need to avoid full-scale famine.

International pressure on Israel has intensified, as humanitarian organizations warn of a growing risk of mass starvation and escalating health crises in the region.

“The risk of famine in Gaza is increasing due to the intentional withholding of aid,” said Dr. Tedros. “This is a preventable tragedy.”
