UN Chief Hails Pakistan-India Ceasefire as Step Toward Lasting Peace
ISTANBUL — United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday welcomed the ceasefire agreement between Pakistan and India, calling it a crucial step toward reducing tensions and fostering regional stability.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, Guterres said the agreement is a “positive step toward ending current hostilities and easing tensions” between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
He expressed hope that the ceasefire would pave the way for lasting peace and create conditions conducive to resolving long-standing disputes between the two countries.
“The United Nations stands ready to support efforts aimed at promoting peace and stability in the region,” Dujarric added on behalf of the Secretary-General.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced that both nations had agreed to a “full and immediate” ceasefire following several days of intense cross-border fighting. The ceasefire was later confirmed by Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.
Dar also acknowledged the diplomatic efforts of foreign ministers from Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, and others, noting their key role in facilitating the agreement.
The international community views this ceasefire as a potential turning point in South Asian diplomacy, with hopes that sustained dialogue will follow.
