Social Security recipients will see a boost in their benefits in 2025 due to a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA). The adjustment will be 2.5%, lower than the 3.2% increase in 2024 and the smallest since the 1.3% rise in January 2021.
The increase aims to help beneficiaries keep up with rising costs for food, fuel, and other essentials, with the average recipient receiving an additional $50 per month. However, some retirees are concerned that this raise may not be enough to cover their expenses.
Recipients will be notified of their new benefit amounts by mail starting in early December, with the increased payments set to begin in January.
In addition, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will also see higher payments, which will take effect on December 31. SSI provides monthly assistance to individuals who qualify for Social Security benefits based on income restrictions.
