US Greenlights $8B Arms Deal with Israel

US Approves $8 Billion Arms Deal with Israel Amid Middle East Tensions

The Biden administration has formally signaled Congress about an $8 billion arms package for Israel, including advanced munitions for fighter jets, attack helicopters, and artillery. This deal, aimed at bolstering Israel’s defensive capabilities, is poised to be one of Biden’s final major arms sales to the nation.

The proposed package features AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM missiles to counter aerial threats like drones, 155mm artillery shells, and a variety of precision weapons, including Hellfire missiles, small-diameter bombs, JDAM kits, and 500-pound warheads. Deliveries will unfold over several years, combining existing US stockpiles with newly manufactured supplies.

While Congress must greenlight the deal through the House and Senate Foreign Relations Committees, the move comes amidst rising regional tensions. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accused the Biden administration of imposing a “silent arms embargo,” claims denied by US officials.

Domestically, Biden faces criticism from some Democrats urging conditions on arms sales tied to Israel’s military actions in Gaza and humanitarian considerations. However, the president has resisted such demands, prioritizing Israel’s long-term security.

A US official emphasized the sale’s purpose: resupplying critical munitions and maintaining Israel’s air defense edge against threats, particularly from Iran and its proxies. The administration reaffirmed its commitment to equipping Israel with the tools to safeguard its sovereignty.

As the Middle East remains a hotbed of uncertainty, this deal underscores the enduring US-Israel partnership, ensuring Israel’s arsenal stays battle-ready in a volatile region.
