US Urges Foreign Terrorists to Exit Syria

The United States has called for the expulsion of all foreign terrorists currently in Syria, reaffirming its commitment to regional stability and addressing Turkey’s security concerns. In a press briefing in Ankara, US Under Secretary of State John Bass emphasized the necessity for foreign fighters, particularly those linked to terrorist groups, to leave Syria. This follows a clear demand from Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, who issued an ultimatum to the PKK/YPG: dissolve and leave Syria or face potential military action.

Bass underscored the US’s alignment with Turkey’s security priorities, noting that the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which includes YPG fighters, cannot serve as a sanctuary for foreign terrorists. He reiterated the importance of ensuring that foreign fighters return to their countries of origin, where they may face justice for their actions.

The US’s stance on the issue aligns with Turkey’s view of the PKK/YPG as a direct threat to its national security. However, while Turkey sees the SDF as an extension of the PKK, the US regards them as key allies in the fight against ISIS in Syria. This ongoing disagreement has led to tensions between the NATO allies, but both sides are striving to collaborate on securing Syria’s future and preventing further instability.

Bass also pointed out the need for careful management of Syria’s transition, avoiding the emergence of new terrorist threats and maintaining peace for Syria’s neighbors.
