Latonja Ross, a 51-year-old Chicago resident, stood in line at Sanad Social Services’ food pantry on Friday to pick up a turkey and sides for Thanksgiving. With limited food stamps, Ross said the turkey giveaway from local organizations is a big help for her family. This weekend, the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago (CIOGC) is hosting its second annual “Feasting with Dignity” turkey drive, distributing over 5,000 turkeys to people from diverse backgrounds. Sanad’s pantry, one of 35 partner locations, offered groceries, including canned goods, produce, and a choice of halal turkey or chicken. Zakat Chicago, part of CIOGC, provided the turkeys, with volunteers serving the community. The drive aims to help families and bring together neighbors of different cultures and faiths. Zakat Chicago plans to expand the drive next year, including offering complete meals.
