The climate crisis disproportionately impacts women and girls, especially in vulnerable regions of the Global South, where existing gender inequalities are worsened by extreme weather events. Research from the UN highlights that disasters such as floods and droughts increase intimate partner violence, cause displacement, and exacerbate early marriage and school dropouts. In countries like Nigeria, girls already facing educational barriers due to poverty and gender discrimination are further affected by climate change, as schools become inaccessible and unsafe. However, initiatives like the Center for Girls’ Education in Nigeria are working to keep girls in school and equip them with the knowledge to cope with the climate crisis. Educating girls not only helps them but also strengthens community resilience to future disasters. By empowering girls, countries can improve their overall ability to adapt to climate challenges and reduce their vulnerability to environmental crises.
