Turkey, Arab World, Europe Back ICC Warrants for Israel’s Netanyahu, Gallant

The recent arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant have sparked widespread support from several nations, including Turkey, countries in the Arab world, and numerous European states. The warrants, issued in connection with alleged war crimes related to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, have ignited significant international attention.

In late November 2024, the ICC accused Netanyahu and Gallant of orchestrating and overseeing military operations that allegedly targeted civilians and violated international law during Israel’s military campaigns in Gaza. The charges come amid an intensification of hostilities between Israel and Palestinian groups, which has led to thousands of civilian deaths and widespread destruction in Gaza.

Turkey, a vocal critic of Israel’s actions in Gaza, expressed strong support for the ICC’s decision. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called the warrants a necessary step towards accountability for war crimes, aligning with his country’s longstanding criticism of Israeli policies in Palestine.

In the Arab world, countries such as Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Egypt have also backed the ICC warrants, citing the need for justice and international accountability. These nations have long been critical of Israel’s military actions in Gaza, and the warrants are seen as a symbolic victory for those advocating for Palestinian rights.

Several European countries, including France, Spain, and Belgium, have joined the chorus of support for the ICC’s move, emphasizing the importance of holding leaders accountable for actions that violate international humanitarian law. While the European Union as a whole has not made a formal statement, individual nations have expressed their backing for the arrest warrants.

The warrants’ implications for Israel’s leadership remain uncertain, as Netanyahu and Gallant continue to enjoy strong domestic political support. However, the move has intensified global discussions on accountability for war crimes in the context of the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
