US President Donald Trump has defended his administration’s handling of artificial intelligence, saying the US has safeguards in place while China relies largely on President Xi Jinping as the ultimate authority over the technology.
In a FOX News interview published Friday, Trump pointed to the administration’s decision against Anthropic when discussing measures designed to protect Americans while maintaining US competitiveness in the AI race. He said the company had engaged in serious wrongdoing and that his administration moved quickly to stop its work with the government.
Earlier this year, the Trump administration classified Anthropic as a security threat and prohibited it from working with the US government. However, a federal judge ruled late last month that the decision was unlawful.
Trump argued that effective AI safeguards require highly capable people who can understand and manage the rapidly developing technology. He contrasted the US approach with China, saying Beijing has fewer formal restrictions and that President Xi effectively serves as the main check on AI development.
The president also claimed that the US is currently ahead of China in the AI competition. He emphasized the enormous potential impact of the technology, describing AI as more significant than the internet and possibly even greater than the Industrial Revolution.
Trump said the full scale of AI’s impact could become clearer within about a year and expressed confidence that its overall effects would largely be beneficial.
